How does your sense of balance work?

Deep inside each ear, three fluid-filled loops sense when your head turns, and two small organs sense gravity and movement. Your brain combines their signals with what your eyes and body feel to keep you steady.

1Three loops

Three loops, one for each direction

Your inner ear has three tiny curved tubes set at right angles to each other. One senses nodding, one shaking your head no, and one tilting toward your shoulder.

2Fluid

Moving fluid bends tiny hairs

The loops are filled with fluid. When your head turns, the fluid lags behind for a moment and bends tiny hair cells, which send signals telling your brain which way and how fast you’re turning.

3Gravity

Tiny crystals sense up and down

In the middle sit two small organs covered in microscopic crystals. Gravity and sudden movement shift the crystals, so you can tell which way is up and feel an elevator start, even with your eyes closed.

4Brain

Your brain checks with your eyes

The signals travel to your brain, which compares them with what your eyes see and what your muscles and joints feel. When everything agrees, you stay steady without thinking about it.

The answer

Dizziness is a disagreement.

Inner eareyesbalance

When your inner ear and your eyes report different things, your brain gets confused. That’s why spinning, reading in a car or a rocking boat can make you dizzy or queasy.

Common follow-up questions

Why do I feel dizzy after spinning around?

The fluid in your inner ear keeps swirling for a few seconds after you stop. Your ears say you’re still turning, but your eyes say you’re not.

What causes motion sickness?

In a car or boat, your inner ear feels movement while your eyes, focused on a book or the cabin, see stillness. Looking at the horizon helps the two agree.

Why does the room spin when you’ve had too much to drink?

Alcohol gets into the fluid and sensors in the inner ear and changes how they respond, so they send false signals of movement.

When should dizziness be checked by a doctor?

If it comes often, lasts long, or comes with headache, hearing loss, fainting or trouble speaking, contact a doctor.
