How does your body burn fat?

When your body needs more energy than you get from food, fat cells release fat into the blood. Your muscles burn it with oxygen for energy. What’s left is carbon dioxide and water, and most of it leaves your body through your lungs when you breathe out.

1Fat cells

Fat cells open the store

Fat is stored energy. When you haven’t eaten for a while or you move a lot, hormones signal the fat cells to release fat into your blood as small fat molecules.

2Muscles

Muscles burn it with oxygen

The blood carries the fat to your muscles. Inside the cells, it’s broken down with the oxygen you breathe in, releasing energy to move, keep warm and keep the body running.

3Breath

You breathe most of it out

Burning fat leaves carbon dioxide and water. About 84 percent of the fat you lose leaves as carbon dioxide through your lungs. The rest leaves as water through urine, sweat and breath.

The answer

Most of the fat you lose, you breathe out.

Fatoxygenenergy + breath

Breathing faster on its own doesn’t burn more fat. Fat loss happens when your body uses more energy over time than you take in from food, and your lungs are simply the main exit.

Common follow-up questions

Can I burn fat from just my belly?

No. Your body decides where it takes fat from, mostly based on genes. Exercising one area builds those muscles but doesn’t target the fat on top.

Does sweating mean I’m burning fat?

No. Sweat is how your body cools down. The weight you lose by sweating is water, and it comes back when you drink.

Is there a fat-burning zone?

At low intensity, a larger share of your energy comes from fat. But harder exercise burns more energy in total, and total energy over time is what matters for fat loss.

Can fat turn into muscle?

No. They are different tissues. You can lose fat and build muscle at the same time, which can make it look like one turned into the other.
