How do wireless earbuds stay connected?
Wireless earbuds use Bluetooth, short-range radio that sends music as a fast stream of digital data. Your phone and the earbuds pair once and agree on a shared code, then hop between radio channels in step, many times a second. Each bud has its own radio, chip and battery, and the two stay in sync with each other too.
Phone and earbuds pair once
The first time, the earbuds and your phone exchange a secret code. After that they recognize each other automatically and connect the moment you open the case.

The phone compresses the music into digital data and sends it by radio at about 2.4 GHz, the same band as Wi-Fi. To avoid interference, both sides jump between dozens of channels many times per second, in a pattern only they know.

Inside each earbud a chip receives the data, turns it back into sound and drives the speaker. A tiny battery powers it all, and the two buds keep their sound timed to each other so left and right never drift apart.

Bluetoothchannel hoppingsound in both ears
Bluetooth has a short range, often about 10 meters, and the human body blocks it surprisingly well. That’s why the sound can stutter when the phone is in your back pocket on the other side of your body.
Common follow-up questions
Why does the sound cut out sometimes?
Distance, walls, your own body, and crowded places with lots of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals can interrupt the stream. Moving the phone closer usually helps.
Why is there a delay in games and videos?
Compressing, sending and decoding the sound takes a moment. Video apps usually compensate, but games often can’t.
Is Bluetooth radiation dangerous?
Bluetooth earbuds send very weak radio signals, far below safety limits. Health authorities have not found any risk at these levels.
Why does one earbud run out before the other?
Often one bud does more work, for example handling calls or the connection with the phone, so its battery drains faster.
